Aftercare Instructions

Fillings Aftercare

A filling is often used to restore a tooth affected by decay or damage. After your appointment, the tooth may feel a little different, and some temporary sensitivity can occur while it settles.

Your dentist will give you any instructions specific to your filling. Follow those instructions if they differ from the general guidance below.

What to Do Today

If local anaesthetic was used, wait until feeling has returned before eating so you don’t accidentally bite your lips, cheeks or tongue.

While you are numb:

What Is Normal?

Some temporary sensitivity can occur after a filling, particularly with hot, cold or sweet foods and drinks.

The tooth may also feel slightly different when you bite while you get used to the new filling.

If sensitivity is severe, worsening or not settling, or chewing remains uncomfortable, contact Dentists of Ivanhoe.

Eating After a Filling

Once the numbness has worn off, you can generally return to your usual diet.

If the tooth feels tender:

Follow any specific eating instructions given by your dentist.

What to Avoid

Fillings Aftercare FAQs

A new filling can feel different from your natural tooth. If your bite feels uneven or the tooth remains uncomfortable when you chew, contact your dentist so the filling can be checked.

Contact Dentists of Ivanhoe for advice. Keep the area clean and avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the tooth until it has been assessed.

There is no fixed lifespan for every filling. It can vary depending on the material, the tooth, your bite, oral hygiene and everyday habits. Your dentist can check the filling during regular appointments.
