Porcelain Veneers Aftercare

Porcelain veneers become part of your smile once they’re bonded to your teeth, but the teeth underneath and around them still need everyday care. How you eat, clean your teeth and use your bite can all affect your veneers over time.

Your dentist will give you aftercare advice based on your treatment. Always follow their instructions if they differ from the general guidance below.

What to Do Today

Your teeth may feel slightly different after your veneers are placed. You may notice the change when your tongue runs over them or when you bite down.

If you’ve had local anaesthetic, wait until the numbness has completely worn off before eating or drinking anything hot. You may also notice some temporary sensitivity, particularly to hot or cold foods and drinks.

What Is Normal?

Some temporary sensitivity can occur after veneer treatment, particularly where the natural teeth have been prepared.

If hot or cold foods and drinks trigger sensitivity, you may find it helpful to avoid them temporarily. Your dentist may also recommend toothpaste for sensitive teeth.

Contact Dentists of Ivanhoe if sensitivity is severe, persists or is causing you concern.

Eating with Your Veneers

Once the numbness has worn off and your teeth feel comfortable, you can generally return to your usual diet.

What to Avoid

Grinding and clenching can place additional force on porcelain veneers. If you grind or clench your teeth, particularly while sleeping, let your dentist know. A night guard may be recommended if appropriate for your individual circumstances.

Also avoid habits such as chewing pens, biting your nails or repeatedly biting hard objects, which can place unnecessary pressure on your veneers and natural teeth.

Looking After Your Veneers Over Time

Your veneers can be cared for as part of your normal oral hygiene routine.

Your natural teeth still need the same care. While porcelain is generally resistant to staining, deposits can build up and the natural teeth around your veneers can change colour. If you’re considering teeth whitening, speak with your dentist first, as whitening affects natural teeth rather than existing porcelain veneers.

Porcelain Veneers Aftercare FAQs

Some temporary sensitivity can occur after veneer treatment, particularly where the natural teeth have been prepared. Contact your dentist if it is severe, persistent or concerning.

Not everyone needs one. If you grind or clench your teeth, your dentist may recommend a night guard based on your individual circumstances.

There isn’t a fixed lifespan for porcelain veneers. Their longevity can vary depending on factors such as your oral hygiene, bite, grinding or clenching and general care. Your dentist can monitor them during regular appointments.

If a veneer becomes damaged, worn or otherwise needs attention, your dentist can assess the veneer and the underlying tooth and discuss the available options.
