Myth: Gum disease is only a problem for your mouth [ video ]

Transcript:

– Hi, it’s Dr. Shehan from Dentists of Ivanhoe and today I want to talk to you about the myth that gum disease is only a problem for your mouth.

Gum disease is a systemic disease, meaning that it affects your whole body. So gum disease has been linked to diabetes, heart disease, stroke, infertility and also complications with pregnancy, as well.

And the way it works is, if your gum disease is out of control and it’s quite bad, it’ll start to affect your diabetes, it’ll elevate the risk factors for stroke and heart disease. And it works vice versa, as well. If your diabetes is uncontrolled and it’s quite high, that’s gonna cause an effect on your gums as well, where the gum disease will get worse. As the gum disease gets worse, then in turn, the diabetes gets worse. It’s a vicious cycle, guys, so make sure you look after your whole body. Go see your doctors, go see your dentist, make sure you look after your health.
