– Hi, it’s Dr. Shehan from Dentists of Ivanhoe Central. More and more people, both young and old, are wanting to have whiter teeth. Teeth whitening is a safe and repeatable procedure and works by breaking down stains in your teeth to give you whiter teeth.
There are three main types. Internal bleaching is when we whiten your teeth from the inside, and this can be done on a discoloured tooth that has had root canal treatment.
The second method of whitening is take home whitening, where you whiten your teeth at home. Your dentist will make you some customised trays that you will wear with whitening gel in them, for about 30 to 60 minutes a day, for about two to three weeks.
Now, it’s important to avoid smoking and stain-causing drinks like tea, coffee, and red wine while you whiten your teeth. The third and most common method is in-office whitening, where your dentist will use a strongly concentrated gel and a powerful LED light such as this one to give you whiter teeth in less than an hour.
Because we’re able to use the high concentrated whitening gel, we tend to get better results with this method compared with the other methods. Now, most people will experience some form of tooth sensitivity and sometimes pain during the whitening treatment and for about 24 hours afterwards.
We’ll provide you with relief gel and sensitive toothpaste to combat these things. Now, remember, only your teeth will whiten, not your fillings, your crowns, or your veneers.
And whitening won’t last forever. Most people will have to keep whitening their teeth every couple of years to maintain their bright smile. While whitening works well for most people; some teeth won’t whiten exactly the same way as we would want them to.
So be aware that you might be one of the unlucky people where whitening doesn’t quite work well for you. All in all, whitening is a safe and simple procedure that can be repeated many times to give you a brighter, whiter smile. Thank you for watching.
